Re: Areas to Avoid in Zurich (when looking for place to live)

"Things you should be aware of when he is looking for a place". Not clear whether you are asking for help on the interim place or you future family residence.

As an interim place I would say, anywhere central that is either the right side of town or near an S-Bahn for work.

Opfikon is S7 or S5 I think and if you're working at UBS, you have the choice of Opfikon or Glattbrugg stations, so trains are easy.

Beyond that as already mentioned in other postings its a lifestyle decision, Langstrasse is indeed the red light district, and would be a fun , lively place to live alone even if your interests are not in that area :-)

Living alone anywhere in Switzerland is difficult, so I would stay close to the city centre if possible.

Like in choosing an airline, safety in Switzerland is a given, and generally falls lower down the list of desirables such as lake proximity (overrated in my opinion) and taxation (depends on your income level, but I wouldn't make that a primary consideration unless you're in the 200+ bracket)

The real decision for me : most people are either townies or country folk. You know which you are...

My husband grew up in the Bern/Solothurn area, so doesn't have a lot of familiarity with Zurich. Plus he's been gone from Switzerland for the past 10 years. Now it looks like he'll be getting a position in the Zurich area (currently looks like Opfikon). Initially he'll be renting a studio flat or possibly a flat share until we can get the whole family move organised (house sold etc.).

I am assuming that with Zurich, as with most (all?) cities, there are areas that are best avoided in terms of crime/drugs/safety. Are there any particular areas that we should be aware of when he's looking for a place? He has one friend who lives in Zurich, but he hasn't heard back from him yet on this, and besides, I always think it's a good idea to get input from multiple people on questions like this. Said friend lives in central Zurich near the train station and works on the opposite side of the city so not sure how much help he could be on this anyway, if that's where my husband does end up with a position.

Thanks for any input you might have.
