That's one option, but Pumpernickel is really a specialty. Black bread is made with rye and sourdough. Here are some pictures from my homemade bread:

When you find really good bread here it's because of a European tradition for breadmaking. It varies (hence the lack of black bread here), but commonalities are found everywhere in mainland Europe.
