Re: Cats, Pets and apartments

Hey all,
This thread hasn't been added to in awhile, but it seems like the right place for my question, so hopefully someone notices. I was just wondering, does anyone know what the laws are in terms of having a cat and trying to get an apartment?

Allegedly, in Toronto, a landlord can choose not to give you a place if he/she knows you have a pet, but can't do anything about it if you move in, even if you've signed a contract that specifies no pets. Considering most Swiss rent their residences, I was thinking maybe there are similar protective measures here? I still haven't completely figured out the Swiss mind-set yet, though, so maybe it would be a ridiculous idea here.

Cheers!
The application form will ask if you have pets. If you say yes, and you have to specify how many and what kind of pet, if this is acceptable to the landlord you will be given a lease that will state you can keep these pets. If you do not disclose on the application form that you have a cat, and then move the cat in with you, not only will you have lied on the application form, but in all likelihood you will be breaking the conditions of your lease. The right to keep a pet is not automatic. The landlord can give you notice.

Pets in cages, such as hamsters, would be excluded. Pets refers to dogs, cats and birds.
