I also think data roaming charges are insane. But again - everybody knows that and if you keep data turned on while you're abroad, it's not the iPhones fault. Other mobile phones also check for your e-mails on a regular basis if you configure them to do so, resulting in the same problem.
Blackberrys are a bit smarter here - you can configure them to disable data as soon as you roam.
