Blaggedde!! [Basel Fasnacht badges]

Hi,

Newcomers to Basel may be wondering why since yesterday, they have been encouraged to buy "Blaggedde" (Fasnacht badges), and what the tradition is all about.

The money from the badges is used to help pay for Fasnacht - which this year runs from Monday 11th February at 4am (I am serious) until 4am on Thursday 14th February.

For Baslers, Fasnacht is at the centre of one of the biggest social networks and you either love it or you hate it. I've been in a clique since 2005 and it has been a great way to socialise outside the expat universe.

I have written a few articles on my blog all about Fasnacht for those who want to know a bit more about the tradition. Perhaps a good starting point for newbies is the Fasnacht FAQ.

I hope some of the newcomers will take the time to watch the goings on. You'll be able to recognise me - I'll be wearing a funny mask...

Cheers,
Nick
