My question is, is it generally safe to drink from mountain rivers in the Swiss alps? that is with due attention to any cows etc 'doing the business' up river

Having hiked a lot around North Wales, I would reccomend the purchase of some purification tablets if you are going to do this. Most camping shops would sell them.
