The Ottomans authorised the removal. Since the locals were using the marble for building material and to make lime, the chances are that he actually saved the marbles for posterity. c.f. the condition of the remaining marble work there.
The marble was being disposed of by the Ottomans who saw no value in it, and can be found in collections throughout Europe.
