VERY Good tip!! If you have a connection in America you need to go through imigration AND you need to collect your luggage and re-check it for your next flight. If you connect in Europe your luggage will go straight through as long as you book through one airline or partner airlines.
When we bought our flights for the US this August I did a search on-line for tips - especially when to buy flights. Most of the information I read suggested between 3 and 4 months before you want to fly. Longer than 4 months and the airlines haven't advertised the deals and short then 3 months the prices tend to go up, and they keep going up - rarely go down except off season like february. We bought our flights for £500 each to go to Philly (4 months in advance), then just added my mother-in-law and her flight went up to £690!!!
