just for my understanding, after you attended the migros course did you really feel able to speak (at a low level at least) german?

Well, it all depends on you....
Many people taking classes at Migros or other (language) schools think the ability to speak is already included in the price they pay
(I used to teach myself at Migros and experienced that).
Of course, the more your work and practise german has a direct influence on your ability to speak the language then.
