Re: How do speeding fines work in Switzerland?

Ok with all this talk about speeding, is it REALLY that hard to follow Swiss speed limits?
I am used to driving in the US and our speed limits are very similar to Swiss ones. 75mph (120kmh) on a motorway. 35mph (56kmh) in most urban areas. 55mph (88kmh) on rural roads. The rule of thumb is that anything more than 5mph (8kmh) over the limit and the police will likely issue a ticket.
If you decide to drive 40kmh over the speed limit on a motorway, which would be driving 160kmh or 100mph, in the US the police will not look the other way. 100mph is most likely not a traffic ticket. That is a free set of chrome plated bracelets to wear for the evening, a ride in a shiny new car with lights on it, a quaint little stay in a bed and breakfast bars on the widows, all until you get to see a judge and bond out. Hope that it is not a Friday evening as you likely won’t see the judge until Monday morning.
I solve this by driving the speed limit or no more than 5 over. I have had my grossly negligent transgressions (260-270kmh in 70kmh zones….so only 20kmh over) with speeding, but I better be damn sure I won’t get caught before I do it. I have also matured a little bit and figured out following the speed limits isn’t that hard and if I want to race, do it where its safe…a race track.
So why cant people just adhere a little better to the limits?
