According to Google Maps, it's 11.6 km from the city center. The way there should be slightly downhill given that the river flows in that direction, I guess, but you can ask Starbug for more details.
Don't worry about being slow, I wen to Thun last Friday and I am about the slowest cyclist on the road. Bern surroundings are mostly flat as far as I can tell...

its a very nice run alongside the Aare, with the added benefit of running a tunnel around Worblaufen for 250m cutting a huge bend in the river.
am away next week, but would be game for an evenings perambulation the week after.
