Re: Why fountain pens?

Earlier this year, my 8yo was instructed that he needed a fountain pen for school. Slightly surprised, we went and invested in said implement.

Yesterday he tried to do his homework, and the flippin' thing twice sprayed ink all over the place! I tried with a new cartridge(sp?), but today it did the same again.

But why use those things at all? The ballpoint pen is 60 years old and rarely makes such a mess. They have given up on goose feathers, at least, and hammer/chisel/stone plate.

And what are those skills good for anyway? Most of what I write in hand are shopping lists, the rest on computers.

Having grown up in Denmark (started school 74), I have never used them myself. Neither has my Portuguese wife.

I am surprised the school didn't provide the fountain pen! At the primary school my kids went to, the school gave them their first fountain pen and it's some kind of a special one for little hands and all that. Maybe it is a Bernese thing? The kids never had any mess with theirs.
