| Apple doesn't allow for programs to work in the background. So yes - Fring needs to be open all the time if you want to remain connected. That's probably the most annoying thing about the iPhone :-(

Coincidentally, John Gruber has just put up

EDIT: For those who haven't come across him before, the author is a reasonably well-respected* pundit on the Apple scene.
*In other words, he tends to be referred to and quoted by other mainstream Apple-related sites as a source of some knowledge and authority. YMMV.
