Normally the official teaching language in Switzerland is High German, except for foreign language classes where it should be the language taught unless the level is too low. However, since the Swiss don't like speaking High German, they like to forget that. That's why it's always good to remind them.
If you talk to people outside of class you might also want to try speaking in English. Paradoxically, many Swiss Germans (including myself) prefer English to High German.
