Re: Mountaineering schools / courses

Switzerland is home to the SAC (Swiss Alpine Club) which is known the world over for being a great organization which teaches the craft of mountaineering. That said, it is mostly conducted in Swiss German.Recently however, I've been told that each chapter (there are clubs for every region of CH) has it's own plus's and minus's. It also depends on what kind of learner you are and how much free time you have to take classes over multiple weekends etc.

I used to work for a well known mountaineering and climbing school in the US called the American Alpine Institute. AAI teaches the full gamut of mountaineering diciplines from rock climbing and ice climbing to expedition mountaineering, and all of the intricacies in between.

If you'd like me to recommend a specific guide with knowledge and experience in the Swiss and French Alps (who is also American) please send me a PM. I have several contacts that I'm sure you would be very happy with. They all operate out of Chamonix, France and Zermatt, CH in the summer months.

Good luck with your learning. Mountaineering is a wonderful life-long fascination for many. Climb (and ski) safely!
