From what I gather, reactions to lower offers vary considerably, some report the vendor being almost insulted, and preferring for their house to remain unsold for years rather than suffer the indignity of lowering their price.

I would say try it. Anything is negotiable. You are talking about huge sums of money here that could be saved through simple discussion.
