Regarding stationary for stationery

The shame is, I saw this same mistake in the latest edition (12th) of Working and Living in Switzerland by David Hampshire; Private School heading p. 122 "Fee aren't all-inclusive and extra obligatory charges are made, e.g. for clothing, health and accident insurance, text books and stationary". I assumed it was just the British way of spelling, like "tyre" for "tire".
