| Re: Mission impossible - BBC iPlayer on PS3?
Hi all,
Just using my wife's account as I haven't got around to setting one up for this forum yet as I've been busy starting my new job in Zurich.
I too have a PS3; and your right the iPlayer is a top feature of the latest uk firmware. At home back in the UK we use the iPlayer via the PS3 all the time.
So much so that I wanted to be able to view the iPlayer abroad from any machine (PS3 or laptop) that I just had to find a workaround to the IP issue.
Its true that BBC, ITV, Channel 4 players use GeoLocation technology on IP Addresses (they can tell where you are connecting from by the range that your IP addresses falls in).
I wont go into too much detail here (message me if you want more info) but I've set up a VM (Virtual Machine) at home in the UK which runs some basic proxy server software (which is free to download). All i do when I want to watch iPlayer, C4oD, Sky Player, ITV player etc is set Internet Explorer to use this proxy server.
My laptop in Zurich then appears as a UK IP Address and I can watch any iplayer programs ok, as my internet traffic gets routed via the UK. no issue with bandwidth etc, I can control who has access to it, e.g require username and password.
I use Dynamic DNS to get around the DHCP issue of IP Addresses changing etc. I've set up a simple PAT rule on my router in the UK which would forward any traffic from a port I specify to the Proxy VM. And if the VM accidentally dies i have a method to remote wake it up from here (using WOL) so I don't even have to call anyone in the UK to (press the on button)!! I can remote control it.
In terms of the PS3 you can configure this device to use a proxy server (in network settings) and your laptop / PC would not use the proxy server therefore iPlayer will work via UK proxy on the PS3 and Laptop would be connected as usual via a Swiss ISP.
I personally have written a little vbs script which allows me to set the proxy on /off on my laptop by clicking an icon (dead easy).
Hope this helps let me know if you want any more info....
So I guess the options are:
1) set up a VM as proxy, host in UK - this is what i have done. You have control over it
2) use a free UK proxy server - but these are a bit hit and miss and stop working after a while
3) use a paid proxy server - but I think they charge about £10-15 per month and theres no QoS (guaranteed service levels etc - Quality of Server)
Cheers
Will Hignett
