Those stats are only interesting if you consider the size of the global handset market. This was 110 billion dollars in 2005, and 136 billion in 2006. By 2011 it should exceed a quarter of a trillion dollars.
If apple "only" picked up 1% of that market, I dont think they'd be too upset with 2.5 billion dollars worth of sales. And lets face it, the iPhone, like the iPod, is going to be a huge driver for people to go out and finally get round to buying a mac. So with the handset sales and the secondary selling, Apple wont be losing any sleep over these "low" figures.
