My wife(Swedish) and I(American) are coming to Zurich at the end of August to spend a month to look for a place to live. I will be retiring and we are going to see if one of the cities in Switzerland may be the place for us. My wife does not want to live in Sweden but we have grandchildren so want to live in Europe to be reasonbaly close to the family. You said taxes are higher inside the city. Does the city tax? I am used to federal and state taxes but city taxes? Currently we are paying $2600USD/mo for a 1400 sq ft 3 bedroom house with old kitchen and bath in moderate neighborhood in San Francisco. Can we expect to pay more, less the same for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment in Zurich? I keep hearing how expensive things are in Switzerland and am trying to get a handle on housing costs. Thanks for any help.

P.S. My wife rides. Are there any stables near to Zurich?

Hi Roy,

You're going to have to work in square meters to make any comparisons, and as you realise you can forget a house in the city of Zurich.

Yes, search these forums and google for tax rates. Every community has their own. There are federal taxes too but these are about 20% of the total tax bill. Homegate.ch is a property site for Switzerland and you can compare taxes on various communities there too. Also look for 'tax foot', the muliplier for tax calculation.

There may be tax advantages for you as far as capital gains and inheritance taxes too. The canton of Zurich (these are cantonal!) has no inheritance tax between generations. Canton Schwyz has none at all whoever you leave you money to.

Horse riding could be a problem in the town of Zurich, but not outside...
