BTW.. Thanks Crumbs for the suggestion to go to Conforama
They have agreed to replace the defective pieces for no charge as the bed was still under warranty.

Only problem is that they will take a month to get it.
I'd put the mattress on the floor and the bed frame against the wall until the part arrives for just a month.
