| I believe all recent EU passports have a digital representation of the photo stored on a machine-readable chip. At least for the Hungarian passports that's the case. At the same time, that's also all that's required by the EU and the US - nobody (as yet) demands for fingerprints to be stored in the passport. Switzerland just volunteered to have the prints taken so they can later be used for criminal investigations (not yet possible but will be within a couple of years).

On the UK Passport, it could only be the photo then which they are quite fussy about getting your head in the centre of the picture and a white background. I can hardly see how that photo coming out of a photo machine can give much information to be honest. I thought they would be doing finger prints; iris of the eye; hair folicles; cheek swabs etc.
No doubt this information would be available to various bodies when lap tops are left behind or employees fancy some extra income etc etc.
