I had exactly the same thing happen to me when I arrived -- it took a while to get me set up in the payroll system, so my first payroll was settled in cash. Unaware of the CHF1'000 note, I innocently asked for large notes when the teller asked me how I wanted my cash, expecting 100s.
When I went home, it was like show-and-tell at the dinner table. The notes were the highlight of the day! And then I did what any good Swissie would do: I stuck them under the mattress so I wouldn't lose them.
