Hi,
You can also watch TV with subtitles using Teletext. Most TVs can show teletext, and main movies on SF1 (like the ones around 8-9pm) have the subtitles for hearing impaired. Go to TXT page 777 or 888 - that's where it should be. I don't know about German TV, look for 'Untertitel' on the main TXT page.
I found it really helpful to learn languages myself.
