Re: Cure for cancer: CURRY!

While we are living longer, it's not the sole reason cancer rates have gone up.
A couple of points.
Cancer was known and referred to centuries ago. There are saints and churches devoted to it. There are alleged curing springs and wells regarding cancer and tumours and growths from the dark ages. This is not new news.

OTOH, as recently as last century people were still dying from consumption. THis covers a lot of illnesses and diseases. Cancer, TB, Influenza, are just a few of the conditions that were covered by this "generic" diagnosis.

The main reason that cancer is such a huge bogeyman is that it results from the body's "normal" metabolic processes going wrong. While it is genetically linked, it still appears to be mostly random and arbitrary and that is terrifying to most people. We fear the unknown and like most religious situations we are turning to mystical or magical solutions for our answers. For may people there is no real difference between religion and science as they are not capable of understanding either really well. So for the typical "non-scientific" person, belief in science or belief in religion are the same.

We don't need "Magic Cures or Food" to save us from many of these cancer related illnesses. We need to stop eating "fake" food and start eating real food again. It isn't a question of "Bio" or "Organic" but rather a question of how many preservatives and colourants that are in our foods that don't really need to be there. How many freezer meals does the planet really need?

In the long run, we get cancer more because of three things in order of importance.
1. We live longer.
2. We can actually diagnose the disease reliably. So we know what is killing us.
3. We are adding things to our food supply and environment that aren't healthy and those things have the potential to be more carcinogenic than the previous options.

Before we get carried away about the third point don't forget that people put lead on their faces as make up over a century ago and consumed (whether by accident or design) rather large amounts of rare earths and heavy metals as well. Not to mention they lived near volcanic vents and near other sources of natural toxicity so this isn't a particularly new problem either. Neither should we get carried away with trying to remove ourselves completely from the modern era by denying the usefulness of chemicals, insecticides and herbicides. There is a trade off between being able to raise disease free produce and live in "clean" environments and the risk of conditions that "might" be caused by these agents. The difference is that we should now know with what we are doing the damage to ourselves and with general knowledge should be able to protect ourselves from these excesses.

No magic or gods involved here.

If we as a society want to blame something for our woes, then feel free, but don't expect me to join in.

Good Luck,
Brian.
