i left switzerland for 8 months last year. i had a permit b, and my gemeinde told me that if i left the country for longer than 6 months, then i would have to cancel permit.
however, i think they would probably turn a blind eye to 8/9 months out of the country, as long as you kept paying health insurance (which is mandatory, and in any case can only be cancelled if you have proof of 'check-out' from the country, for which my gemeinde charged me the princely sum of 30 chfs).
i cancelled my permit to save on health insurance costs as i wasn't working during this period, and also because i wasn't too worried about starting again with another permit b (although some people might be more concerned about receiving a permit c earlier if planning to stay in country longer than five years...). | |

I might want to dwell upon your case here!
My scenario: Me & my wife are on L Permit (due for renewal by June this year). Its an L-L extension, so I am not foreseeing any major issues with that..fingers crossed
Since my spouse cannot work on a dependent L , she's planning to leave Zurich for a period of at least 6 months..around July'10 and coming back around Jan '11.
Would anyone reckon that she de-registers herself, so as not to be troubled while entering Switzerland again in January next year, considering that she would still hold a valid L Permit at that time.
Additionally - I am not planning to stop her Insurance premium as it might complicate the matters. Its as if she just went out on a vacation for around 6-7months and came back happy

The reason for all this is to avoid the lengthy visa process again (if she deregisters) as she would anyways be converted from L-B next year by June 11 and by then she can
at least look forward to find some work here
.
Any pointers would be well appreciated.
P.S: I went to my Gemiende and they were of the opinion that you must ask the Immigration authorities about this.
