Some real shortcomings there, though quite a few can be addressed with software updates.
On the other hand, Apple don't have a good record of software updates to give enhanced functionality on the iPod. They definitely prefer the user to buy a new device to get improved functionality, even though they could increase the functionality of older devices through software.
Apple did a good job with the screen and UI, but as an actual device it falls very short of what I would expect for the very hefty price. I'm still planning on getting a HTC Kaiser but I just saw that HTC have something else in the pipeline shortly that's a more direct competitor to the iPhone - but with 800x480 screen and a keyboard...
