About "The health insurance company does not cover me while I'm in Japan or the US"

Surprising, I have had several different Swiss health insurances & they all gave me a number to phone if I was sick in Switzerland & another number to phone if I was sick abroad.
Number to phone does not mean the insurer will pay the treatment bills!

Standard emergency medical cover is limited to what the locals would get (within the EU) or twice what you would get in your home canton (if outside the EU).

Standard medical cover excludes non-emergency treatment outside CH. Hence, anyone on an extended stay outside CH should contact their medical insurer and clarify additional premiums for treatment abroad.
