| Hi Jenny,
My husband and I have taken our Health insurance from Xundheit which is partly sponsored by the Employer. Now, I have a requirement for a root canal treatment. I understand that Xundheit's health insurance does not cover dental treatment unless it is caused by accident or sickness. I dont know what sickness means. But they have clearly mentioned that dental treatments for my case is not covered. The treatment for a tooth is very expensive. I would like to know whether it is anything possible with the existing insurer or can i take a new insurance. Kindly clarify. Thanks. | |

Just in case Jenny's busy or on holiday; I know root canal can be urgent.
It's almost certainly not good news. As you've discovered, dental isn't included with the normal basic insurance. And yes, you can get specific dental insurance, but it's very expensive AND will require a thorough check-up before cover would be offered (to determine the rate you'd pay, and whether the insurer wants to accept you, I guess). Existing conditions like your current need for a root canal wouldn't be covered.
It's tiresome, isn't it. My 6 yr old had all her molars repaired, including 2 root canals, under a general anaesthetic last month. We've always looked after her teeth well - my 10 yr old has no fillings, for example - but she just has rubbish, weak enamel. Yet even that's not covered, so we are paying a 3,000 chf bill, just like the parents of kids who swill Coke and suck lollies all day. Bah.
I had a root canal a year or two ago, and it cost about 950 chfs. If you have the time and aren't in too much pain/ too infected, then shop around, the price can vary a great deal.
