Thank you all for your input. I was thinking Zurich vs Zug because my wife grew up in Chicago and might get a little stir crazy in Zug (seems nice but small). Also, Lucerne could be an option.

I will be visiting Zurich in October and will spend some time walking around and getting a feel for the neighborhoods you have all graciously suggested. I will also test the commute and public transport.
