How to do your tax return Kt ZH

Sorry if I have done this before but well I keep getting asked...

Here is my short expose: how to fill in the Zurich tax form via Private tax.
Firstly you are requested to fill in personal details. That should not be so difficult. Dont forget the important ones such as Konfession aka religion and Zivilstand.
Next click the number 2 sheet.
Take your Lohnausweis that your company sent you probably in Feb. Get the value at the top in the third box, I think, for NettoLohn II. If you have not worked the whole year you must click the red box and say from when you have worked. Same if you have more than one employer
Ditto Wife.
If you worked as a sole trade then the next bit is also relevant but I guess that does not apply.
3.1 & 3.2 leave blank
If at any stage unemployed then you fill in the value for 3.3 - note this is not part of a salary hence does not go further up.
4. Click on the red bit you are going to be filling in some parts here. You need to enter your account information and values of shares that you have. This is according to the bank sheets issued for the value on 31.12.2006. Read the difference between having the value in column A and column B. If the account has had withholding tax then it is column A otherwise B. A therefore includes all bank accounts and all shares that have paid dividends or not. Column B is interest on tax repayments(!), Swiss loans and lottery wins. If you are daft you can also add in your international account values...
5. Covers other income for example for children from an ex wife (note directon she pays you) 5.1/5.2 or if you have received a bequest 5.3 or anything else 5.4.
5.5 ignore does not apply.
6. Have you a house if so it goes here. Note this covers both your house 6.1 to 6.3 and others 6.4
7 is the sum of the incomes.
Now starts the fun...
Next page starts at 11. Cost of working. If you click on the little red page on the right...
1.1 Abo for public transport if you have one GA for example you can book here.
1.3 allows you to claim mileage in your car for getting to work.
2.1 Have you got a canteen at work. If so here you put 1500 in box 206. If not then you put 3000 in box 208. If you have a mix ie canteen at work and you were away from your normal workplace for 50 days without a canteen then you put 170*7 in box 206 and 70*14 in box 208.
2.2 you don't work shifts
3. If your salary is more than 126500 you put in the box 1 on page 2 at the start 3800 otherwise 3% of your salary. If you are self employed this can change but as a non-self employed non-specialist clothed guy you are going to have to settle for 3800.
4. If you have done training relevant to your job and paid yourself you can claim the costs in box 215 otherwise you put 400 in box 214 -
By both 3 and 4 it fills the pauschal in for you and it is only if you want to claim something else that you need to change this.
If you have claimed the fee for the Km travelled and not with public transport you need to justify this. Note here if you live "in the sticks" and there is a time difference ôf over 1 hour or maybe you need to work past 8pm and the buses home stop then you must state your reasons for claiming the km and not the abo amount here. You need to check to see which one fits your needs better if you are able to claim ie with which one can you reduce your taxable income the most - so don't just claim the train fee if you can claim driving. The best is almost always by driving...
Now on to other deductions.
12 Interest on debts.
13. If you have kids and wife from earlier and are paying them monies then this goes in here.
14. Here you put in 6365 for your 3rd pillar which you clearly have.
15. Click on the little green button and state how much you have paid for health insurance and life insurance and other insurance. Remember you will need to send copies of the policies.
16.1 Have you made extra payments to your company pension scheme. This is useful if you have received a big bonus you simply buy available capacity in your pension scheme (if you have any)
16.2 No you have not given money to the SVP...
16.3 Do you pay anyone to look after your money? Thinking here about bank charges - you deduct these here.
16.4 Have you had an accident and needed to use taxis to get to work - If so deduct here.
16.5 MAde a win selling a house? If so put the difference in here. If your business is buying and selling houses then you needed to have filled in as self employed anyway.
16.6 Not likely that you are going to make an entry here...
17 wife works enter the max permitted for each column.
The program then transfers all the figures you have entered thus far. You can claim extra in 22.1 if you have had an accident or illness that has actually cost you more than 5% of your income.
22.2 is for donations to charity or anything to do with the State structure ie canton gemeinde etc.
24. Got kids you get to see their real value here 6800 francs each wow... Note it does not matter whether they live with you or not.
26 Do get income from non moveable things in other cantons ie houses. If so you can choose to be taxed there instead.
26.2 You can try and claim for a reduction from declared income from abroad. For this you are going to need to show the authorities you have paid tax on the income or have at least declared it to the local tax authorities so that you have an official statement to give them.
Next page savings...
30.1 it brings over for you.
You need to fill in 30.4 if you own a car - they calculate the value
Don't fill in anything else unless you already have or the authorities will find out or you are already claiming against it...
31 If you own a house you need here to fill in its official insurance value. And in 31.2 it takes the values you filled in earlier for all the houses you own.
31.3 If you bought a forest or land then it is taxed according to what you paid for it.
32 You are not self employed so move on.
33 are your debts transferred over.
40 is interesting. If you cash in any of your old age savings plans say to buy a house then they are taxable and the amounts have to be entered here.

The next thing you do is make sure you have all the documents you need ie lohnausweis, bank statements, 3rd pillar etc and then print the lot out sign it and put it in an envelope.
Job done go have a beer.
