| Hmm. Doesn't the iPhone currently only support EDGE for Internet-type stuff? And isn't that AT&T only?
It probably won't make calls on T-Mobile either because they use CDMA2000 and non-standard frequencies. | |

iPhone also works on WiFi, which is freely available in US & much, much quicker than Cingulars creaking EDGE networks.
AT&T (Cingular) supports GSM 850 & 1900, although 1900 is pretty scarce on the ground, it will support 3G going forward.
T-Mobile USA supports GSM 1900, so the 850 EDGE will not be applicable.
The fact that hackers have been able to penetrate the OS, thus opening it up to new apps & also the recent SIM unlock has greater ramifications in Europe, where the market is more mature.
Many of the European carriers work on similar modes of GSM, as we are much more of a roaming community, when compared to the US. This means people will be able to free up the handset unless the chosen vendors & Apple manage to plug the gap.
Remember, Apple are in for
10% of all call & data revenues generated....

... so it is in their interest to do so.
