Hi
Assuming you are from one of the older EU states then the situation is very stright forward. You apply for a permit based on living with your boyfriend, this is done with 1 form at your local commune. you will need 2 photos a copy of your passport, a copy of his work contract and a copy of your rental agreement.
He will get a letter saying basically that if you leave him and they have to pay you social security he will be responsible for an amount (I think it's only about 1500 ChF) if he doesn't agree to this then he needs to sign and return the letter.
You are then free to look for work or study as you wish, and eventually they will then send you a permit
all very easy.
