Not nearly as much as the website displays . For short stay whilst you find a place, its not bad at all though.

Student share accomodation is known as WG in German. Have http://dict.leo.org running when you're looking through accomodation. It helps to not rely on ads in english.

I am leaving my appartment this month, and it is 10-15 min walking from ETH. It is a 1-bedroom flat, 30 meters, totally furnished, big enough even for two (I live with my girlfriend here), ADSL, TV, and a lady cleans it each week. I think it is really nice. good luck in that case. If you were lucky enough to find something cheaper the competition would be so fierce that you'd really struggle. You'd be better off searching the university noticeboards for a sharing arrangement in a student house.

Of course the price is high, that's why I am leaving; but this is Switzerland man. It is not to say that my thing is the best, but whith this situation cannot be cheaper. I have my doubts you could find something much cheaper, as Mark says. Anyway, good luck

http://www.homegate.ch is the main website for apartments in Zurich. Have a browse and get an idea of how much things are.

Zurich is an expensive city. For apartments, demand far outnumers supply and so for anything less than CHF2000 (or even CHF2500), you will get plenty of competition for the same apartments. It's not unheard of that 200 people go see an apartment. You also have to weight that in as it's not just the "finding" a cheap place but it's also the getting.

Anywhere near the ETH (walking distance) is prime Zurich spot. Prices get less as you move further out but then you wouldn't be "near the ETH".
