I am moving to New York for 6 months from Zurich..
Looking for a one bedroom apartment..Anything within walking distance to Grand Central station pls.. If anyone knows of anyone looking to let their apartment for a short period or pointers in the right direction, all very much appreciated. Thanks.

Of course the NewYorkTimes at http://www.nytimes.com but not as ideal for 6-month deals.

I find Manhattan pretty safe but again nothing to compare with anything in Switzerland.*
Manhattan is very diverse and changes from block to block. But this is again the beauty of it. Depends on your budget and your 'likes' I'm sure there is something that fits you there.

* I'm still finding myself amused with the parked bicycles outside Luzern's train station. In NYC the 100m pole with parked bicycles would have been skinned in seconds!
