That remains to be seen, paying for software patents, when a huge chunk of of the I.T community is against them was a gamble, however, even if software patents become obsolete, which I personally think they will be eventually, the new SOPA regulations going through congress will offer just as good protection.
The big corporations will not go down gently after spending so much time in research and development to let their IP be copied, SOPA is the first step to protecting it, expect much more in the future and stiffer penalties for IP thieves.
A patent even if they become obsolete in the future it is the ideal tool to present in a copyright case, it gives the owner solid registered proof when an idea is theirs, as long as they were first to market (US) they can blow any thing close out of the water.
If they stay in place, and when the patent is approved, as owner I get a 17 year monoploy...
