May I also chime in and give my sincere thanks for your efforts (and those helping you) in getting the forum back up and running. Although I'm fairly new here, I can already see what a valuable place this is to come to for assistance, to chat about this and that, and to "meet" other English-speaking folks who, for a myriad of reasons, have come to this lovely country to live (at least for a little while)... |

Hi guys, just wanted to quickly highlight something. Many people pledged donations on this thread. The system shows that some of you did hit the donate button, but so far no donations actually come through.
This kind of thing happens quite often (I guess that people just change their mind when they actually have to whip out their credit cards), but since a lot of stuff has been rebuilt, I just need to check if there are any technical issues that need to be resolved.
Therefore if you have tried to donate, but were unable to for some reason, please send me a PM and tell me what happened. If there is something wrong, I'm sure you'll understand that I'd like to resolve it |

I did some actual useful research during the downtime, came close to coming with a feasible plan to solve world hunger monday morning, but then I saw the forum was back up so I stopped working on that.
Seriously, I'm glad you got the forum back up and running, great job. With regard to backups, yea, I'm an IT dude and have experienced restore fails from DLT tapes, bummer.... I find that not using compression or encryption (duh) make a backup far more reliable, try it for yourself. Just my $ 0.02

Mark - I donated via Paypal at 2050 today - no problems. It was actually a miracle that I was able to get back onto EF after being banned by LiteSpeed since 23.09 due to claims of having a non-existent second account and additional claims that I didn't reply to prompts to explain the situation (wrong - I did, within the time specified). Lite Speed - please monitor your e-mails more closely, I had a lot of potential input to the Forum during the time I was banned but was unable to contribute. Big thanks to Lob for re-enstating my Userid. However - Lite speed has sent me another e-mail today so I expect to get "banned" again soon. Lite Speed - I hope to see you on 13th December!!

Sorry just wanted to add a small correction - I didn't have the email address set up which notified me of donations - but I do now. Thanks to those of you who donated. Just so you know - if you've made a successful donation you'll get an email from paypal, and later on a PM from me (depending on my workload there may be a delay between the paypal email and the PM from me). Sorry for any potential confusion caused!
Also just like to correct another thing - I don't do my backups to tape, the truth is that I never trusted them. My backups are done directly to a separate hard disc. This disc is less than a year old. It is the archive files on the disc which were corrupted...

@Yorkie - Thanks for the donation, and sorry about the confusion. I've fixed your account so that won't happen again.

Nowadays I would prefer to use both tape and disk in a "belt and braces" fashion. DATs I do not trust, nor the early DLTs, but later DLTs I do (in conjunction with the right backup software).

Thank you for all the work you do and I was really impressed at how there were continuous updates about the situation. Amazing stuff, two thumbs up!
I have also just realised that I think we have met (the name on the donation page). Does a red Vespa ring a bell? |

Jeez I just about dropped my tea... I just got a DB error this morning (forum has been up again) and I was afraid the forum had taken another dive. Thank God its back up.
Cheers,
Stephan
