Lynn, I do take offence on that remark, your personal opinion or not!

Being just a simple swiss housewife with a big heart and putting in my private time to help expats feel at home here, and did so for 10 years to the dot in various clubs/groups.

I also ran of those 'pesky' yahoo groups, though trying to set myself aside of the general expat bubble groups in some of which I was the sole swiss amongst several hundred ppl at a time............i am not a computer whizz kid nor could i have afforded to set up a forum like this,i feel really hurt , that my well intended housewifey efforts are regarded as that!

I presume you have general moderator powers, I would like to ask you to take me off the EF, e.g,. erase my account please.

Thank you !

sylvie
Hey now... I am sure Lynn didn't mean to belittle your efforts. Neither does the EF staff collectively think bad of mailing lists. EF users have recommended Yahoo groups in the past, and we even have a member who runs her own list. In my opinion mailing lists and forums can complement each other. The forum allows a more flexible structure at the cost of higher maintenance requirements.

Your comment strikes close to home because I'm a mod here with similar reasons and background. Please reconsider this step.

Re: The English Forum Today

EastEnder if you actually read what I wrote you might realise that I said AT THE TIME of the EF formation there was no alternative. NO WHERE did I call you a housewife or belittle your efforts to help the community of expats. I SIMPLY don't like Yahoo groups. I have nothing against the people in them or who run them But 3 years ago, the yahoo group strucutre was cumbersome and not as easy to navigate as a forum.

Now, personally I am utterly amazed how this thread has turned into everyone else having their say about the forum while I was expressing MY PERSONAL DECISION and FEELINGS and NOT opening a discussion about the forum itself but MY ACTION.

And Eastender, if you'd actually read the whole thread you might have noticed I HAVE NO RIGHTS ON THIS FORUM

With all due respect, to expect it to turn out any other way is somewhat naive... I thought that online forums such as this were precisely to allow people to express themselves, which is what you did. Why expect others not to follow suit?

Re: The English Forum Today

Well, this place, with its 'secret areas', weird backstage politics and all the other shenanigans that some of us know about, and others don't, has gone a bit too weird for my liking.

It used to be fun and, occasionally, useful. Now it's just peculiar.

Maybe having my computer blow up on me wasn't such a bad thing after all...

ROFL

Sorry, but that is just too funny.... You post a little atom bomb and expect there to be no response? You are either pulling my leg or you really are very innocent with regard to the workings of online communities, aboslutely no disrespect intended.

So, if I understand you correctly, the idea was that you would have your say and then everyone would just shrug and carry on doing what they were doing? Hardly likely....

I respect what you are trying to do and I enjoy participating in the forum (maybe less now than some time ago...but that is another debate), but ultimately once these things have been started they take on a life of their own. Obviously Mark was a master at keeping things on track, and it would appear that nobody else who is present at this point in time has the same kind of skill (judging by some of the posts and the way things appear to be working out - from my perspective).

This is probably going to get me groaned at but never mind...

Quite honestly if people are SO unhappy with the way things are here, why are you still here????

After tonight, I don't think I will be, to be honest.

I've just deleted my blog (or tried to, at least - for some reason, I'm not allowed to completely delete it, in yet another example of forum weirdness), and, though I understand that de-registration is not an option, I have no more interest in this place.

It's sad. I used to love it. But I really can't be arsed with all the weird **** anymore.

It's only a source of entertainment, after all. And it looks pretty clear that it's finally jumped the shark, so I'll get my jollies elsewhere.

... and I was really looking forward to reading that Ghost thread, too...

That's a bit like asking why do people go and watch England play rugby, cricket, football (pre-Capello), etc (fill in the blanks as appropriate). If we weren't complaining what else WOULD we do???

Re: The English Forum Today

What's the matter with you two? DB, if I didn't know you better, I'd assume that you have discovered your uncle's secret Ouzo reserve. The OP is a statement from Lynn that already is a few weeks old and doesn't require further comment. I'll therefor close the thread.
