New rules for the Marketplace - ignore at your own peril!

We've updated the rules for the For Sale/Wanted and Free Stuff sections of the Marketplace. Please take the time to read the stickies for these sections to ensure you follow the guidelines, as not following them can result in your thread being deleted.

The rules - read these before you post or your thread could be deleted (For Sale/Wanted)

The rules - read these before you post or your thread could be deleted (Free Stuff)

Other Marketplace sections will find their stickies updated in the coming days.

I don't have square brackets on my keyboard. (it's German). Am I permitted to use round brackets?

Mrs. D

Try this:

http://everything2.com/title/German+Keyboard

Quote:
To begin with: the Z and the Y are switched. Irritating. And then there are all the umlauts. Ok, that's bearable. But, the real problem is that the German keyboard is simply NOT designed to work with Everything (quite possiblly on purpose).
The standard keyboard (that is, as I know it) has top-right the square brackets on two regular keys (no Shift needed.) Well, in Germany, there's a special shift called Alt+Gr which sometimes works like Alt, sometimes not. Then, to go with Alt+Gr, there are keys with three symbols on them, instead of just two: one regular, one Shift, and one Alt+Gr. Well, guess what. The square brackets are a Alt+Gr way up there on the number line.

Not on the English Forum. That's an offence & can get you banned permanently.

Well fortunately I found them. By holding the ALT GR key at the same time as the key with ü è on it, I get [ . By hold the ALT GR key at the same time as the key with the ! ¨ on it, I get ]. But I also discovered a bunch of other cool symbols while playing around with the keyboard.

Re: New rules for the Marketplace - ignore at your own peril!

Hey Evil,

Can you give a little background behind the 10 post/7 day rule?

I can see why it makes sense with try to establish a community rather than just a marketplace site, but most people are introduces to the site as they move to Switzerland, and Marketplace forum (housing etc) represent some of their most immediate needs before starting to contribute to other portions of the forum.

Just my $0.02

Alex

Re: New rules for the Marketplace - ignore at your own peril!

The rules are there to not have people just treat the forum like a classifieds site. This rule was already in place for other sections, such as commercial ads.

We are reassessing the rule for housing, but that may not change. However, there is no restriction on replying to threads or sending a PM.

My 2 cents opinion.... this rule will just disable new folks who are moving out / leaving from putting up their stuff for sale to other expats.... which does nothing but prevent expats from taking advantage of good deals... i think the mods need to reconsider this.... and whatever u say... the marketplace is just that... a marketplace... so putting up restricting rules is not going to add any value.

Is having to wait 7 days such a stretch, no-one is going to lose out. Mostly people put items on here (stuff and property) because it's free, not for some expat civic duty. The market place is a bolt on, not the reason for the EF, and 7 day/post is nothing in the greater scheme of things. For all the desperado's who need a buy/sell fix the usual culprits are all still there.

I hope the mods extend the criteria to jobs offered wanted too, for exactly the same reason, and with all the 2 cents comments, most of the folks complaining about these 'restriction' seem to come from the colonial side of the pond... that's my 2p's worth;-)))

Then again, there are some of us "colonials" who think this change is the cat's meow.

I really do not think that someone that is moving will post a thread just 7 days before leaving...for most "urgent" matters there is always Ricardo. I believe this rule was installed so that spamers and one time posters stay away, and I do think its appropriate.

I may have misunderstood.... if its either of the 2 conditions above or both ... if its just one of the 2, then its fine... but if its both... then I hold my ground on my earlier objection.

Re: New rules for the Marketplace - ignore at your own peril!

I didn't realize that I need to conform to both (10 posts AND 7 days), so my thread was deleted. What is even more odd is that I have already sold/given stuff away in the past year. Does this not count for anything?

Well the rules are rules and im sure the mods are too busy to consider everything on a case to case basis

So basically you broke the rule you paid the price
