I really dont care whether the system is in place or not. If it is, I will use it, if it isnt, life goes on.

But, I am seriously laughing my head off here, at how some people who have posted on this thread voting to scrap the system are the most regular at dishing out rep and doing the tit-for-tat neg repping.

Oh the irony and hypocrisy.
Couldn't agree more...

Re: Reputation giving now capped at +/-5 per post

Reputation is determined solely by the length of one's publication list (give or take a few points depending on number of best paper awards and citations in respected conferences and journals). All other systems are ineffective (and therefore meaningless) at representing the true value of someone's worth to society.

so "if" I understand this correctly what you are trying to say is that a size of a ladies fun bags... melons... puppies... hooters...(searching for the PC term) is no longer an accurate judge of their worth to society !?!?!

Rusty, I agree with you 100%... However in industry top executive who is "only product on the market and sales figures count" oriented, he would say scrap your PhD and all the publications and make us some money That's were the factory workers reputation counts. Invested years of education and no rep

Jealousy, Mr Jacek. Executives and business people in general are only envious of the considerable female attention that 521 citations for "A Multiscale Finite Element Method for Elliptic Problems in Composite Materials and Porous Media" can earn its authors.

Well done - Mr Hou or Mr Wu (one of the two) ... only question how to apply it to the EF and get rid of the envy resulting thereof.

In the fields in which I ply my trade, different metrics (to the number of publications) are used...
(1) impact rating of the journal
(2) the number of (presumably subsequent) citing publications
