food and drink

You will be pleased to know I am putting the gut-wrenching worry over the ongoing governmental crisis in Belgium aside to post some important details of everyday life.
I won't bore you with the details of the beer: Hoegaarden, Westmalle, Leffe - whatever's your pleasure, there is a bar serving it on tap and cheap.
The food is, surprisingly, at least to me, almost as good as the beer. The Flemish stuff like stoemp (mashed potatoes mixed with pureed vegetables) reminds me a little of Swiss food - very hearty, nourishing, rib-sticking stuff. But the French influence is very evident too, with lots of fish and fresh produce. The most pleasant surprises about the food? The affordability of dining out, and the quality of convenience food, which I don't normally eat. I praise the lovely people at Delhaize! Even the Christmas markets like at Place-St.-Catherine or Bourse are heavily slanted to food: blood sausage, escargots, mulled wine, and - of course - waffles, as opposed to gifts. Just walking through is olfactory overload. I'll leave you to guess what I've been doing more of - Christmas shopping or eating.
More music I've been hearing piped into the metro: Christmas carols, Wham and Boney-M.

| | The food there is very good (even though the novelty of getting chips with everything wears off after a while). And as for the beer.... If you like seafood, I strongly recommend that you go to the coast. In Oostende you can feast on mussels, fish, etc. and all at a very reasonable price, too. |
