Pinoy Cooking in Switzerland

Last Saturday marked my second month here. While I admit that I'm beginning to miss homecooked food, every trip to Migros or Coop has managed me to land couple of items that allowed me to cook something very close to what I eat back in Manila.

Soy sauce: Migros is a local importer of Kikkoman, both for cooking and dipping. Chicken adobo turns out okay with it, although there's something different... I should try if it renders well with bistek.

Pork shanks: One of the best finds! Migros carries this regularly, and almost always an Aktion item as well. 2 pork shanks for roughly CHF3.50. It seems to be more tender than the one I usually buy in Manila and makes good paksiw. Boiled tender then mixed with some potatoes and cabbage, it makes a good soup on a cold winter night.

Knorr Soup Bouillon Cubes: Back in Manila, there's such a thing as Ginisa mix. Usually, you add this to sauteed garlic and onion prior to mixing whatever you want to add. There's none of that here. Instead, there are bouillon cubes, which I think does the job equally well. Just break it up in hot oil together with sauteed garlic and onion, then throw in your favorite veggies. I hope this gets me back on my diet.

Initially, I thought living in a small village is about the worst thing there is to happen to me. There's nothing to do here, especially after 7pm. It's like someone turns off the switch and everybody is back to their homes. But slowly, I'm beginning to appreciate it. Where else can you get fresh milk, virtually 24 hours a day? We have a local dairy quite close and I have tried their milk a couple of times. Quite good, but you have to consume it really fast because it goes bad after 2 days or so, even with the refridgerator set to the coldest.

We also have a local farmer who comes twice a day, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon, and sells his stock so cheap I couldn't imagine why I've been buying vegetables from the grocery all this time. Last Saturday I got five kilos of potatos and two kilos of carrots from him and it didn't even cost me CHF5.00 for everything. I guess this is what I'll miss when I move to a bigger town in December.

Hey chipmaker, when I was there, I cooked also but the soysauce is so different. Datu puti is still the best. The buillon is also different because ours is tasteful while there is a bit bland.
Nice to hear that you are coping up so well. Two years from now I will also settle there. I hope I will also cope up well.. hehehe..

In Zurich you can actually buy soy sauce and vinegar. from the Philippines in most Asian stores.
