Jacket here, Jacket there

Just how cold can it get in Zurich during wintertime? This seems to be a major discussion point between me and my wife lately. She just came back from California this morning, still feeling bugged why I kept nagging her to buy me more jackets.

Sure, Wikipedia can easily tell me that during the months of November through February, the temperature can dip as low as -1C. But what is -1C for an Asian? I've been through a couple of Phoenix, AZ winters, but I'm quite sure that the temperature in Phoenix during winter doesn't even come close to -1C.

I needed something to show to the wifey how cold a Zurich winter can be. And that's why we need to buy jackets NOW. So here's what a little searching in Flickr got me.

Effort paid off. I'm now a proud owner of three new jackets. And that's on top of the five others acquired throughout the years of doing business travels during wintertime to places like Seoul, Tokyo, and Boston. And yes, I'm bringing all of them to Switzerland with me!

It can get cold but it varies from winter to winter. Your photos probably are from winter 2005/06, last winter was milder but still wet. It's possible that there are only a few or no days with snow in Baden and Zürich next winter. I hope this scenario wouldn't disappoint you.

I don't know where you get your -1° figure from. Minimum temperatures for an average winter typically drop below -10°C for a few days and I've measured -16°C in 2005. Typically we have 5 or 6 days a year where the temperature doesn't rise above freezing point at all. Snow is very variable - some years it's on the ground for weeks on end and other years we only have a few days and it's melted by lunchtime.
