Airports...

Posted 03.09.2007 at 22:41 by Colonelboris
Dear god, Gatwick Airport sucks balls. Apparently, they feel it necessary to remind you over the tannoy that the luggage carts are not for children to ride on and putting up large blue-and-white safety notices on the escalators telling to face the direction of travel. The drinks fridge in Smiths was out of order and I was so peeved about it I didn't buy a bottle of dr Pepper (at £1.25, no less) from them and short-changed them by 15p for a newspaper that had already been read by someone.
There's also a paucity of places to eat in the departures terminal, so I thought I'd leave it until I got to Switzerland to get some lunch.
Then i got to Geneva and realised it wasn't just Gatwick - all airports suck balls. horrible flashbacks of overnighting in the arrivals lounge at Narita; trying to fill nine hours at Philedelphia while sorting out a flight and looking after a sick girl; being singled out for a search in Naples and witnessing some of the worst types of italian police taking it out on a couple of US Navy officers trying to not to attract attention.
It was only when i looked in the Migros at Geneva airport that I realised the mistake I'd made in leaving lunch til I got here: there is no flavour except paprika.

Well, you could have spent your time in better ways...
- standing in the security queue at Heathrow terminal two...
- wandering round and round the old (pre-renovated) Zurich terminal. Kiosk / Sprungli / Kiosk / Sprungli / ...
- the 14 hour wait at Singapore Airport waiting for a connecting flight, with no sleep on the previous plane...

I do agree though - airports are horrible places.

I also reckon airports and planes bring out the worst in people. As does wearing a suit. The idiots going past with gigantic cabin baggage on wheels, and a backpack. The screaming baby that you know is going to be in the row behind you, while the guy in the seat in front of you that reclines their seat full flat 30 seconds after take-off, for the duration of the flight...
