I had the good fortune of spending four summers (1947-1949, 1951) in Switzerland as a schoolboy, and on each of these trips I spent about a month with a Swiss family. We often went for hikes, and I enjoyed both the hiking and the views immensely.

Events in my country prevented me from returning to Switzerland for more than two decades. In 1974 I emigrated to the United States, and soon thereafter started spending a couple of weeks with my mother in Geneva every summer until her death in 1996.

Then, in 1987, I had my first hike as an adult in Switzerland, followed by a bit (later a lot more!) of hiking in New Hampshire.

This blog will focus almost exclusively on my Swiss hiking, though I spend eleven months of the year hiking in New Hampshire!

The rain in Spain ...

Reached Geneva on Monday morning, ran errands and waited for bed time

Tuesday met as planned with HeatherM (ChrisW could unfortunately not make it) for a walk in the Lavaux vineyards. I will just say that they fully justify their reputation, having a knowledgeable guide/companion made the trip even more enjoyable. Thanks, Heather

Heather stopped at Riaz and took the boat back to Lausanne. I continued (guideless and mapless) to Vevey, route marked well enough that I only had to think a couple of times. The approach to Vevey is less urban than I feared, all in all a wonderful trip.

Today (Wednesday) I decided to explore the Sion vineyard path. First off there is no lake, and (perhaps more important) the Rhone valley here is very urbanized, with many big towns is view at any time. Still did an interesting hike up Mont d'Orge on the way, and got good views of the Nendaz (sp??) area.

Tomorrow I leave the plains (hence the rain in Spain ... title ), take bus to Le Chargeur, at base of Dixence dam, and walk to Cabane des Dix. It had spectacular views in 2005; I expect them to be as good this year. On Friday I plan to go over the much less frequently used Col des Ignes (most hikers use the Pas de Chevres or Col de Riedmatten) to Cabane des Aiguilles Rouges, then Evolene for a week.

Life is not merely good, it is WONDERFUL!!!!

PS: It will be even better after I master the Swiss keyboard

Glad you enjoyed the walk. :-) We certainly had quite the day for it! I'll make sure to keep reading your blog to see what other adventures you get up to.
