I have been looking into starting an art gallery in Vevey. I found on Immostreet a great property in a great location (Rue de Simplon) that is only SFR700 per month. It is currently an art gallery so there are a lot of features already there. I am available to work without taking a salary at a 60% capacity, possibly more. I speak fluent French and mother tongue English and am friendly and presentable. I was thinking I could work from the gallery on my art (I am a painter - I can PM you my art website, am not allowed to post it here) which is aesthetically interesting also and could draw people in.

I just thought this rental amount was a steal considering the location. However, would love to join up with someone to split the costs. You could be another painter who would exhibit permanently, or an investor who is interested in the art gallery business. You could possible be a jewellery designer also or photographer. I have only a certian amount of cash per month so would love someone else to help with costs, and also that way we would be able to spend a little on marketing too. The utilities come to less than SFR100 per month so the total we would each expend at a minimum is SFR400 each, which to me seems so affordable for such an exciting opportunity. There is also a possibility that we could run art classes with the gallery, renting out the space for that could also bring in income. I was also interested, but haven't researched this yet, in working with people with mental disabilities and exposing their art or giving them a location to create in.

I have a lot of admin experience and a love of art. I would be willing to do a huge portion of the work, and obviously a great plus is that i would be present in the shop on an unpaid level in order to make our venture a success.

I just went to look at that particular space in person. Although it has a lot of great features, it is a bit on the dark side due to the facade in front, so as affordable as it is and the fact that it is a good location, I think I will keep looking. After further research there are quite a few affordable spaces available at the moment! I am ideally looking for something with a lot of light, an airy open space.

There is a lovely large space on the lac in Vevey with a more expensive rent (1300) The downside to that one is there is not much pedestrian traffic. Ideally the rental cost would be around SFR800 or less as there will be a few other costs (lighting, heating, marketing) in additional and i would like to keep this an affordable venture!!

This link above goes to a space I REALLY love in Chexbres (A small village above Vevey) Aesthetically it is wonderful. The rental price is SFR1,080 per month.

My ideal goal is to find a space where I would be present to exhibit works from other artists and be the sales person and manager for the space. At the same time, to be able to create in the space would be of interest I think to passers by and generate word of mouth interest in the gallery. Lastly I can organize and supervise art groups (this space in particular would be ideal as there is a large
center space that could accomodate a large table / several easels)

There is also a space of 120m2 (VERY spacious!!) for SFR600 per month in Chardonne. I will visit tomorrow this one.

Many of these shops are cheap because many people have tried and failed at these addresses.

Today we go strolling in city centres when there is no traffic, ie on Sunday when the shops are closed. I believe the age of passing trade is coming to an end.

My approach would be to set up a website, or even sell your art on www.ricardo.ch If you are unsuccessful there is no charge.

Another point is that many restaurants and hotels display art for sale. What better way to sell a painting than to have somebody sit in front of it for 30 minutes? I do think the picture frame is equally important.

These ventures will cost you very little, and you would remain in control.
