Does this exist in Switzerland. Like the ones in New York that bike like madman to deliver packages etc etc.

I was just wondering.......

Re: delivery bikers

They definitely do in Basel. It'd be surprising if they didn't elsewhere.

Fixed means fixed gear bikes - ie you have one gear only and cannot free-wheel as the gear is fixed to the rear wheel. It's what all the cool kids are riding now

Pretty much all over CH I'd say, even smaller towns. Popular job for sports students or snowboarders in need of cash in the summer months.

I see them regularly at train stations (Geneva, Bern, Zurich) to pick or deliver packets.

I better get my old fixie out of the back of the shed.. it's ages since I've felt cool.

p.s.. re. Geneva... I was done along the quay side by the bain des paquis a couple of weeks ago and I've noticed there are a couple of bicycle "rick-shaws" down there now as well plying the tourist trade.

As usual, its is mandatory by law to brakes on your fixie. Seriously. That was what the lady at the bike store told me when I asked why put front and back brakes on a fixie when obviously you brake with the...well only in Switzerland. No arguments there.

I've never ridden a fixie* but wouldn't brakes help you stop? I'd have thought the momentum of the bike would make it hard to just stop pedalling to make an emergency stop.

*well not for about 40 years - I guess my trike was a fixie

if you tromp on the pedals ( backwards ) it has the effect of braking, possibly going into a braking slide

I can see the argument for front brakes.

We used to freewheel down the hill with feet on crossbar to avoid the pedals. But you can`t get your feet back on them pedals at speed. So`s you needs yer brakes.
