Being both: entrepreneur and employee?

Does anybody have information about if it is possible to have a regular daily job and be a entrepreneur at your freetime? Is there any regulations in Switzerland about cases like this?

Welcome to the forums.

It is possible, but depends very much on your contract with your employer. Pretty similar to anywhere else in the world.

It is quite common as long as it doesn't conflict with your work. Several businesses that I know were started by the owner doing another job 60-80% of the time while getting started.

Re: Being both: entrepreneur and employee?

Ok, in Finland we can do same thing as a entrepreneuer as I we do in our daily job, if you will not competite against your employer. Like: You are electrician in company that manufactures for example boats and you do electric assemblies for houses as a entrepreneur at your freetime. Does this apply in Switzerland or is it contract based situation?

Re: Being both: entrepreneur and employee?

It's down to contract. So long as you don't compete with your employer, it's usually not a problem. Even then, some employers don't worry about it. I had some electricians do work on my house. I paid them directly for the work, and their employer for the certification that it was done properly.

Re: Being both: entrepreneur and employee?

Hmm.. How about the insurances and taxes? Do I have to pay double insurances and taxes when having two income sources?

Re: Being both: entrepreneur and employee?

Hi

No you don't. You will fill in an annual tax declaration.

You enter as your main income what you have earned with your employment contract (Haupterwerb) and you also enter what you earned being self-employed (Nebenerwerb). Whereas your main income (Haupterwerb) is where you earn most and where your working hours are longest. E.g. you are amployed 60% then your Haupterwerb is your employment. If your employment contract is 40% then your Haupterwerb is your income from sel-employment.

Your employer normally pays taxes, pension fund contributions and deductions for you. From your self-employment part you must pay contributions to the AHV(AVS) yourself. You must notify them that you are intending to work free lance and they will send you a bill; which they normally do once in a quarter.

There is no mandatory insurance ot deductions from your income as self-employed apart from taxes (based on your declaration and AVS (AHV).

Actually, if your employment contract is less than 100% your employer is not allowed to forbid you to work else where, unless you are a direct competitor to the company that employs you. However, if this is not part of the contract then you are free to act as you wish.

Good luck

Re: Being both: entrepreneur and employee?

I agree - even if the employer mentions that you should inform him of your second job "Nebentätigkeit", it's usually quite easy to get a standard form from your HR responsible. Once you get it signed by your superior there shouldn't be any problems, as long as your second job doesn't conflict (timewise/ conflict of interest) with your primary job.
