Just a side note... I've seen a garage sale advertised at my local supermarket and I did visit is (just as I would back home). They certainly didn't have a permit to sell their stuff outside their house. But thanks for the info RC
The Gemeinde lady said you don't need a permit to sell off private property. So if it was THEIR garage and THEIR lawn, they were well within the "rules". On the other hand, if you live in an apartment building, tough cookies, you need to sell off your kitchen or living room. The street outside is off limits, as it is city property.

@MiniMia, sure, you can sell T-shirts off your backpack at a concert venue, because your T-shirt will have...wait for it.....the concert band's logo...tada..only one design. But what do you do when you're selling T-shirts with many different, unique designs? How do you showcase them all with only 2 hands?

Sometimes I wish I was a reincarnation of the many-armed god Shiva....ha ha.

(But thinking about it, I can thing of more interesting things to do with many arms than selling T-shirts in Switzerland....I'd open a massage parlor, I should think, ha ha! OK I better go get some lunch, lack of food is making me say very silly things...)

I really do wonder how the Swiss economy works. Having come back from spending 1 month in Thailand, where street vendors abound, with all their color and variety and...yes, very affordable prices, I wonder how the hell the Swiss survive...
Very well. It's quite clear which is the richer country. Now we know - street vendors impoverish a nation.

That's interesting! I wonder if this is a regional thing. ...
Almost certainly.

In BL and BS if you have the permissions of the owners of the land, you can sell things from it. E.g. during Fasnacht, I know a couple who sell hot Chinese food outside Thalia - they pay Thalia for the privilege. And I've often seen charity tables outside our local Migros.

Ha ha. Well, let me tell you something. "Thai", in thai, means "happy". So, "Thailand" literally means: Happy people land.

Compare to Switzerland. Land of....Switzers? Huh?

I rest my case.

Odd, Wikipedia doesn't say that.

Do you own a car? Would it be too much of a circumvention (of the rules) to keep "spares" in the boot? Especially, provided you're not bringing people back to the car and selling from the car, but just periodically going to restock?

Why not carry a binder with photos of models wearing your shirts? Once a buyer has selected your shirt, you can just go to restock because you are out of that shirt in your backpack. Carry the most popular design(s)/size(s) in your backpack, so you'll have those on-hand.

Turns out, you CAN sell stuff on the street...
Indeed, they do a lot of that in Paradiso (or so I'm told).

Somehow, the sockman of Landquart comes to mind. Maybe you can pay him a visit and ask how he does it

Re: Selling on the street

While we're on the topic of when/where you can or can't sell...I've been asked more than once to bring my jewelry to EF meet-ups. I've hesitated because I didn't want the establishment to call the cops as soon as I got out some stuff to show, particularly if a person was interested in buying and got out cash. Any advice on that??

First of all, I doubt very much t-shirt sellers at concerts have just one design with just one logo. But that's beside the point.

Anyway..... Let me think about it for a second. Well, I guess you don't show every single different t-shirt you have at once. Is that really necessary?

I'm sure you can put two t-shirts in your hands... One in front of the other, backsides together, then flip, flip, flip. After a while, you take two more out, flip, flip, flip.

And then.... wait for it..... if someone is interested you can tell them about the other designs you might have. Then... wait for it.... take the other ones of your the bag and show them.

But you're sounding quite defeated before you've even tried. It was your idea! Get out there! Show the world your t-Shirts!

Re: Selling on the street

Well, in the countryside around here there are quite a few "honesty tables" where people leave the jam, cakes, apple juice and dried fruit they've made, alongside a box for the money.

Maybe you could set up an "honesty clothes rack"

Re: Selling on the street

You could also borrow a friend's garage/garden for a day maybe in exchange of a little gift.

Or publish some pictures here in English Forum.

Or like someone already sugested, take fotos, make an album to display them and take it with you everywhere to show to friends, co-workers and strangers.

I also agree you shouldn't give up!

Ah, if only. Unfortunately, I'm not a kid. I'm just looking to sell things on a one-off, one or two day thing, tops. So...not worth buying a whole market stall...I don't even know my things would even fill up a whole table. So I was looking for alternatives. Oh well, looks like I'm stuck trying to sell things to my friends from work by email or something. (shrug).
try the flea market maybe?
you still have to pay for the stand of course, but you can also rent small areas.

In Switzerland, can one set up a little table and a chair and sell stuff on the street? Like, say, a lemonade stand, or sell

Thanks!
Guess you finally set up your lemonade stand on the internet.
Methinks it needs more variety.

Re: Selling on the street

well done re your website and good luck.

i can't believe that you can sell stuff out your bag in switzerland, i'm impressed by it. i don't know but i'd bet it would be illegal in the uk. i like the opportunity-apsect of it, the idea that if you're in need of cash then you can simply take to the streets like The Apprentice and hawk stuff.
