Until now if you wanted to sell goods online in Switzerland to the Swiss market using paypal you could show, but not actually charge in CHF - euros was the nearest. So it's a good thing...

This is just a bit more than that. Paypal was open to abuse in CH before and now you are secure for up to CHF1500 per transaction which covers most things. Additionally you might well see a change in attitude to credit cards in Switzerland. At least I hope so...

Interesting facts, but Paypal is still useless for Switzerland in my opinion.

As you all know we have 3 + 1 languages in switzerland and + another 1 if you count english! We had to dump paypal for credit card payments and get another system onboard for exactly that reason, because if someone who speaks english selects switzerland when typing in their credit card data, the whole page would switch to bloody german.

Same problem exists in Canada (english/french) and Mexico where everything gets displayed in english instead of spanish!

At least they've done some research and haven't assumed that you all speak Swedish

But I agree - as changing country changes the language, why not be able to select the language of your choice?

This is fairly typical of paypal. I should point out a disclaimer - I own ebay (who own paypal) stocks, but I should have sold them long ago before things started going downhill.

To ask people in the French-speaking part of Switzerland to complete their credit card transaction in German will get their backs up (especially if they began the transaction in French) and will negatively influence the visitors impression of the company offering the service.

I think it's great that Paypal can provide some competition to German-speaking part of the market, but they really need to get their act together on points like this.

You could write and complain, but you'll just get standardised computer generated responses along the lines "Dear Sir, we do not have support for this feature at this time, we apologise for any inconvenience or offence this may have caused. blah blah blah"

They couldn't be doing worse than online gaming stocks right now.

When I first arrived here I opened a Paypal account. As I did not speak german at the time, I had to switch to the US site and open a US paypal account. Since I have a US credit card and bank account, I had no problem. Through PP I accepted credit cards until I got 2 chargebacks 30 days after the purchase was made. I had all the proper documentation and even the signed copies where the customers that requested the chargebacks for unauthorized use of their credit cards had signed that they had picked up the merchandise in question. Paypal was not helpful in rectifying the situation and I cancelled the account. Eventually I opened a Swiss PP account but I do not accept CC payments through it anymore. At any rate, I think it is a move in the right direction for them to accept Swiss Francs. Now they just have to introduce the rest of the business tools they offer in the US to the rest of the world.

We use PayPal all the time. It is almost imperative for any onilne company selling into the UK/US. Maybe 75% of our ebay UK sales are settled through PayPal. PP have also had a huge marketing campaign in Germany and the proportion of PayPal payments has risen over the past year from well under 1% to around 5% now.
They have added so many different currencies now I really lose count - we stick to accounts in $, Pounds and Euros and that tends to be enough, as anyone with a PayPal account can pay in any currency anyhow.
Noone has asked us to settle in Swiss Francs yet although we sell all the time to Switzerland in Euros
Chargebacks and customer problems do happen now and then, but certainly no more often than with any other payment method - it is basically not a problem with a good overall volume. A lot maon about PayPal charges but surely they are no more than Credit Card Merchant Acounts anyhow.

Both chargebacks where for a little under $1000 each and they happened over 2 years ago. PP was very slow in addressing the problem even though I had provided them with all the necessary documentation. After 6 months of waiting for the matter to be resolved I gave up and cancelled the US PP account. Lost almost 2 grand but I couldn't be bothered anymore and since then not really wanted to give PP credit card processing a chance again. With moneybookers I do not have chargeback problems because people that want to pay with their credit cards are actually using their CCs to fond their MB accounts and from that cash making the payment so in actuality it is a cash payment that they are giving me. Anyway, to those that use PP I am glad that it is working for them but PP left a sour taste in my mouth and I don't feel like giving them a second chance. Grrrrr......
